In his latest personal project, Hamzah Shanbari, 澳门足彩app’s Director of Innovation and Strategic Initiatives, gives construction companies of any size or scale a roadmap to the latest industry innovations and solutions.

His book, "Paperless Builders: The Why, What, and How of Construction Technology," offers a comprehensive framework for professionals navigating the complexities of digital transformation.

In his early years as a Virtual Construction Specialist, Shanbari spent his days refining 3D models as part of a small Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) team. Frustrated by inefficiencies and late nights at the office, he began experimenting with emerging technologies to streamline his work.

“It started because I wanted to get home to my family sooner,” he said, “I needed a more efficient way to complete my workload, and I knew the tools we were using were somewhat outdated.”

When his colleagues asked how he was able to leave the office earlier than usual, they too quickly adopted the new tools and processes, improving efficiency for the whole team. Over the next two years, his focus expanded to innovation beyond his department, contributing to broader technological integration across the company. In 2018, Shanbari became 澳门足彩app’s Manager of Construction Technology and Innovation and helped establish Dysruptek, the company’s venture and innovation arm.

The construction industry is notoriously resistant to change, favoring traditional methods and established practices over new systems. Shanbari has experienced this challenge throughout his career as an advocate for modernizing processes. Representing new technologies requires salesmanship, patience and commitment.

“It’s definitely a sensitive topic for a lot of people,” he said. “I remember when we were forming Dysruptek in 2018, we had just hired Cutler Knupp to lead the initiative, and as we were introducing him to people around the office, I couldn’t believe how many times people said, ‘You’re not going to take my job, are you?’ Clearly, there was a misunderstanding. We were here to make everyone’s job easier, but when new technologies are introduced, it makes people nervous.”

In the book’s first chapter, “Change is Hard,” Shanbari identifies the common fears that come with adopting new digital tools, from job security to doubting their efficacy and value. His framework emphasizes the importance of “clear communication, inclusive planning and hands-on training.”

The book is structured in three sections to simplify the digital adaptation process—the “why,” the “what,” and the “how.” The “why” identifies inefficiencies tied to paper-based workflows and the opportunities that digital solutions provide. The “what” explores technologies such as laser scanning, drones, digital documentation platforms and AI, emphasizing their practical applications. The “how” introduces Shanbari’s BUILDER(S) framework, a step-by-step process for evaluating, implementing and scaling technologies to improve efficiency and reduce waste.

By compiling modern research and specialized expertise, “Paperless Builders” is a one-of-a-kind resource that offers accessible insights and solutions for those shaping the industry's future.

“The hope is that by 2030, this book will be obsolete,” Shanbari said, “because the industry will have fully embraced these changes, and we’ll be looking at a more effective, safe and sustainable industry.

“For me, the book isn’t just a guide but a call to action. I believe that through curiosity, persistence and collaboration, companies can overcome resistance to change and foster a culture of innovation. We have the tools to modernize operations and improve project outcomes, ensuring the industry continues growing and evolving.”
